Water is one of our most valuable resources, yet many of us don’t realise just how much we use – or how much we could save. With climate change and a growing population putting increasing pressure on the UK’s water supply, it’s never been more important to cut down on water waste.

From modern appliances to clever design features, here are some of the ways a new build home can help you save water at home, while also lowering your bills.

How much water can a new build home save?

According to the latest Wat-er save report, new homes across the UK are reducing water usage by nearly 8.5 billion litres per year.

To put it into perspective, the average UK home currently uses around 150 litres of water per person per day. For a typical household of 2.4 people, this equates to 130,000 litres of water a year. In a new build home, water usage is significantly lower, with properties typically using just 110 litres per person per day. Crest Nicholson homes go even further and are designed to use a maximum of 105 litres per person per day, helping homeowners to save even more.

This means new build homeowners could save over 35,000 litres of water annually—and that’s before making any additional conscious efforts to cut down on water waste.

Plus, using less water means lower bills. According to the HBF, the average annual water bill for an older home is £473, but in a new build, this drops to £347. That’s a saving of £126 per year! Using less water also means less energy is needed to heat it, providing further savings on utility bills.

Why are new homes more water efficient?

So, what makes a new build home better at saving water?

Smarter bathrooms

Toilets, showers and baths typically account for over half of a home's water use, so new builds include simple features to help reduce this. Dual-flush toilets allow homeowners to choose a smaller flush when less water is needed, cutting unnecessary usage.

Water efficient showers are installed, which use less water while maintaining good water pressure, so you get the same shower experience without excess water waste.

Water-saving kitchens

In the kitchen, modern appliances help save water without any extra effort. Many new build homes come with dishwashers and washing machines that adjust their water usage based on load size. This prevents water from being wasted and can also help reduce energy bills.

Taps in new build properties are fitted with aerators, which mix air into the water stream. This means you get a steady, strong flow of water while using far less than a traditional tap – so you’ll be using less without even noticing.

Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS)

Many new build developments include sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), which help manage rainwater by using natural features like swales and ponds. These systems don’t just reduce surface water runoff, they also improve local water quality, enhance biodiversity and create green spaces for people to enjoy.
